national service for 16 year olds ?

6 weeks military training .
that will help those from the hood who aint used a gun yet , though im sure thats a low proportion.
mind you with all the little neds /chavs at camp the normal folk would get peace .

but i cant see what difference to these little toerags a 6 week course will do except for costing the country more money.

This question has been asked in the correct catagory, IE "news". however, here is my response:
No, not military service but yes to some sort of community service where 16-18 year olds can learn to give something before they take. Perhaps they could deliver meals on wheels, cut grass in public parks, clean the streets etc. This would give them a sense of responsibility, a wage they have to earn , self respect and self discipline and do good for the community at large. Give them the option of military service but as an ex soldier myself, I feel compulsion to be wrong, my reason being that I would rather be in a dangerous situation somewhere in the world with someone who chose to join the Army rather than hope the person watching my back was not counting down the days/hours till he/she goes home to Blighty

Yes, I believe it would in most cases make a diffrence to thier bodies, good healthy food not the crap they get from McDonalds or lazy parent cooking junk food, exercise to tone up muscles, they will learn also learn the benifit of team-work for the common good which should answer your relationship/interaction section of your reply to me.

I agree with John ~ a kind of national service, but community based.

However as others have pointed out in the past this will cost the country a lot of money employing supervisors etc. I don't have a problem with that, if doing some community service leads young folk into a job or even some respect for others as well as themselves it is money well spent.

I think thats probably the best idea though im not sure the term community service is a good phrase for it. i am not in any way for kids getting national service but a 6 week stint performing public services such as john mentioned is a great idea.

Legend you asked what a difference 6 weeks would make to the kids if they did something like this. I reckon that kids who are basically good kids would learn a lot from doing some sort of public service work and would maybe enjoy it. Its only the kids that have no intention of getting along in life that would see it as yet another crap idea. Theres a hell of a lot of great teenagers around, not all of them are thieving little beggars who hang round street corners with lambrini you know!!

I consider myself to be one of those 'do-good liberals' that a number of people on this site hate, but i live in a city in the southwest that has more than its fair share of baseball capped morons. they all need SOME kind of discipline-whether community or military based. Anything to get them away from their booze/fag/KFC comfort-zones and away from parents( I use that term loosely) who think discipline is shouting loudly!
