it is considered rude and offensive to call someone who is overweight fat but it is seen as okay to call someone who is slim skinny or chuck comments at them like 'ya need to get a few sarnies down your neck' god this makes my blood boil sometimes.

I myself am a size 6 and i reguly get todl to eat more, or "oh my god, aren't you skinny". Hello, how would you like it if i said "oh my god, aren't you FTA, you should cut down on the pies".it annoys the hell out of me...!!!
yes, I do agree, I think all sorts of sizist comments are hurtful and offensive. My daughter get called skinny names because she is very slim and this really upsets her to the point where she asks me a lot if she looks normal
I'm 6 ft tall and size 12 and it never fails to amaze me how people think it's fine to comment on my height - it always makes me think about whether they'd comment on my weight if I were a size 20.

But I agree aka pixi - it really makes my blood boil when people think it's ok to comment on personal appearance of any kind.

Probably because the media portrays it is much more acceptable (desirable?) to be underweight than overweight, so it seems more acceptable to comment on it.

Im a 6 too or sometimes an 8 ab-user and it does my head in. The comment you mentioned was just the kind of thing I mean.

At work the other day there was a slight gap between a stationary forklift and a pallet full of boxes. This gap was like 2 inches big and I was told that I could squeeze through to get the sellotape we needed cos i was so skinny. Had I replied 'why dont you suck that big fat tummy in and squeeze through yourself' i would have probably been either clobbered or hauled in the office and had the dignity act read to me!

and dont even get me started on the anorexia comments I get!!! I have a really tiny bone structure so even though Im a small dress size I still do have meat on my bones....I get so peed off that folks actually have the nerve to imply I am starving myself to keep a low weight grrrr
oooh, watch your bp pixi...lol!
I usually get the wisecracks in first but a few yrs ago a hospital doctor (young) asked me whether I'd always been skinny....!!!
Me being me I made a joke about it but really wish I'd said 'Yes, have you always been tactless?'
The phrase 'real woman' has to be the worst thing tho' - apparently you're not one unless you're size 14+.....

slithers out under the bottom of the door :o)

I would say they are equally insulting!!

aww cazza thats so sad, I remember being at school and feeling like an outcast cos all the other girls were 'normal' size :(

yeah heights another thing sasha, im not even 5 ft tall and lots of people talk to me like I am stupid for some reason, its like 'hey my height may be smaller than average but it doesnt mean my brain is' (well lots of folks would dispute that but hey ho lol)

hmm I never thought of it that way ali thats possibly true.

LOL robinia and well done for what you said to the doc lol

awww i must be in a grumpy mood today all ive done all over the internet is moan and whine lol

thanks for that ratter, i totally agree:)
People rarely comment on others being overweight because it also usually implies they are lazy, stuff themselves or are basically a failure in some way. When people are mentioning how skinny people are they are usually doing it out of some kind of jealously as they assume people are naturally like that and can eat what they like. I think everyone would like to eat cakes everyday with no consequences!!
I get that as well, I am about 5'8 so I look skinny admittedly but I eat like a horse lol and people assume that I must stick my fingers down my through ar summat like that maybe we should start replying back with fat comments! lol
I never commented on fat people because I knew it was offensive but I admit I commented on skinny people, not to be malicious, I thought it would be considered a compliment, things like, 'well you don't have too worry about your weight skinny minny over there'.

When I went to uni though I met a girl who used to bullied terribly at school about her slim frame and was really sensitve about any remark. I then realised that skinny people are as self concious of their weight as fat people and so have never commented since.

I therefore think it's ignorance more than malice that makes people think it's okay to comment. (Although comment s about anorexia are made by people who are jealous)
I think it's actually worse! Most of the time fat people can do something about it but are too lazy. I've been skinny all my life and while I expercise and eat like a horse I still stay slender, albeit fairly fit so I'm actually quite happy with myself and don't feel the need to mention that the fat person calling me skinny is fat and probably going to die before me because they are too lazy to do anything to help themselves but create a temporary sense of fullfillment by slagging others off. I don't really mind when they bring they're own inadequacies to the surface, inside I'm smiling.
I agree with all of you,i'm 5'4" and 8st 5lb,i'm a dress size 8. There was once a rumour going around my local area that I was a heroin addict because I am so thin.It took me ages to convince people otherwise!!! Some still don't believe me.
As you know I enjoy a healthy lifestyle and see the benefits of being fit and well.

However, I also enjoy the ample figure of females especially if they have something decent to get hold of.

My view, alas, stretches to the opinion that there are large women and skinny women (and guys) who are set at their natural weight.

For example some size 6 women look like they should be a size 6. However some, namely super models have the face and size 6 frame that makes me want to cook them a huge shepherds pie (with beans inside!!) followed by an apple crumble. They physically need it!!!.

Like wise some larger women, i.e Nigella Lawson, look perfectly natural (and healthy) at their size. Others like the ones that wear cheap leggins with bobbly bits on the inner thighs and often frequent bingo halls, need to diet and look unhealthy.

If somebody is ill through a cold I will say buy some lemsip etc, if they have the squits I will say buy some immodium. If somebody, close to me that is, has become skiiny I would say buy some pies and if somebody looks unhealthily fat, I shall say cut out the biccies love.
Wow a few massive chips on peoples shoulders around here!!
aka pixi love , know how you feel , it's either a comment like ....eat more ...are you anorexic ......youv'e got two threads hanging loose , oh no my mistake, it's your legs
......have you lost more weight.......my god your skinny......
....have you always looked like that .......watch you don't knock your head ( matchstick implied )......or ....you look like a good meal wouldn't hurt . :-(
I agree with you pixi. I know two sisters both are about 5 ft one is a size 8/but size 10 bottom half and the other is about a size 22. W all went to the pub and the thin sister had lost weight. She did in all honesty have a great big bum in comparison to the rest of her and is now a toned and very healthy looking size 8 all over. Her sister said you should see her ribs and stomach she is so mucular she looks like a bloke. Then started jibing her to lift her top up to show us. I was sooo embarrassed for her that I said why dont you show us your stomach and we can see who looks the least healthy. It went down really badly.
By the way Im part of the tubby tubby lard arse brigade so I just see it how it is. I have no chip on my shoulder about thin people.
Goody I had to re-read you last.

At first glance it says (in my interpretation)

One half is 8 (maybe 10) but the other half is a size 22. what a freaky looking individual she must be.

Alas, upon reflection I know what you are saying.
