Don't know if this is the right category or not but here goes. My friend and I were out for the day with kids and while chatting we got onto the subject of eye colour. I admired her young (10) daughter's beautiful hazel eyes. Myself and my hubby and are both blue eyed, as are our children and I said how boring it was, and how attractive darker eyes were. My friend then looked concerned and said that both her and her husband were blue eyed as were her other two kids. To cut a long story short, she is now paranoid that, as she has never been unfaithful, her daughter was accidently swapped at the maternity hospital!! help me put her mind at rest - can 2 blue eyed parents have a hazel eyed child?

Of course they can!! The workings of your genes is not a simple science - it's never as straightforward as that! You have so much information stored in them, going back through multiple generations, that surprising little differences shouldn't be that surprising at all...
Yes, absoutely. My parents are both blue eyed and I have dark brown eyes. I was told the gene does not have to be active in your parents but can be somewhere in the family. My mother's father and sister both had brown eyes and although my mum's were blue I still inherited brown eyes from her side of the family.

Have a look here.

Me and my son both have eyes will all the colours in them. From a far they look grey, but closly you can see brown, green and blue! Very odd!
i have hazel eyes and my ex my childrens dad has green eyes, my eldest has blue eyes middle and youngest have green eyes so no you dont have to have the same colour eyes.

Tell your friend to stop worrying her daughter is defo her daughters ... lol bless
im the only one that has brown eyes in my family and light brown hair ... all my sister brothers and my parents have black hair ............wonder who my dad is lol
I have green eyes and both my parents were blue eyed. anything's possible.
Sister 1 - Brown hair and Brown eyes (me)

Sister 2 - Brown hair blue eyes

Sister 3 - Blonde hair brown eyes

and yet we all look similar so there was def no mix up.

It's all to do with dominant/ recessive genes

fear not

Wow guys! thanks for the great response! I have shown Sarah ( my chum) all your replies and she is sooo reassured. She had got herself into a right state, despite the fact that her daughter is the living image of her!(They're both gorgeous inside and out) So she is one happy lady. Thanks again! xxx
