am just watching that prog about the armed services memorial opened in october this year. They have had some stories on about some of the names on it - from early wars, throught to korea, ireland and afganistan. It really brings alump to the throat. However, why is it that it gets me much more when the friend/comrades are telling the story and are obviously choked up/crying than whent he mums or girlfriends are? Is it because people expect men to cry less than they expect women to? and if thats the case, why is it the older men getting choked up that makes me more upset than the younger ones?

Probably because the friends or colleagues went through the experience with them, and they relive the experience,

Some will call me soft but I get a lump in my throat and actually shed tears when I watch the march on TV every Remembrance Sunday.
My Son was in the Services, came through thankfully, okay, and a whole history of family members being involved in wars and serving in the forces. Some survived, others not.
I find it very touching when I watch the pride of all those men and women marching past.
Hi bednobs, I think Manx has got it right and also seeing a man cry is a bit more emotive because us men don't cry do we, but we do, and we should, also to see somebody older crying I think shows a real vunerability in the eyes and we want to look after them, because they look so sad and helpless, I feel exactly the same way as you do about it,
I have to agree with both Ray and Manx here, I always get emotive at this time of year, and get a lump in the throat, occasionally a tear sips out, but being of the male species, I must confess to trying to hold it back.

Hi cazzz and legend,
When you say 'cold' in referring to answers, could you explain please?,

I'm not having a go, just like it spelled out..
bednobs has never given a decent answer to a question. He or she says things like " what do you want me to do?" in reply to question or "Why dont you google it?". Not a nice person.
That's a bit harsh geraint- Bednobs is blunt yes, but she's not nasty.
If you want a good empathetic cry, try the closing part of Brahms Alto Rhapsody, or It Is Finished from Stainer's Crucifixion.
