None of the stuff I have ever bought over teh counter like Optrex has made any difference, even stuff with antibiotics. But the stuff I get on prescription- fucithalmic Acid- clears it up within a day. Mine crops up once ayear so I have a repeat prescrition in place which i call on when it flares up.
Thankfully it's a long time since I had it & if I remember correctly I was told to wipe my eyes with a cotton wool pad (separate one for each eye) dipped in warm boiled water.
Maybe the Optrex drops aren't as strong as a prescription for the same ingredient (which worked for me).... don't leave it too long before you seek advice, you can't be too careful with your eyes.

AS from recently (last year) you can but chlorophenicol eye drops over the counter at most chemists. Chlorophenicol is the antibiotic most prescribed by GP's when treating conjunctivitus anyway. Fucithalmic acid CAN be used but...this is only on prescription and is only prescribed for resistant conjunctivitus, (ie if the first antibiotic doesn't clear it). Once chlorophenicol is administered you will still be contagious for up to 48 hours so avoid sharing towels etc.
