I have just turned 50 and I cannot complain.I have been offered bowel screening twice -just cos I have a thing about providing but I am going to do it
I now have a mammogram on Thursday and for no reason at all am kacking it.Ive heard its sore but I can do pain and uncomfortable but the results -yikes -Its like when you get a smear -think you dont bother until iyou (well me) gets the all clear.
I am so scared but obviously so grateful my Health Board (Tayside- have this in place automatically.)
So would you be scared and does your Health Board do this as a matter of course?
BTW -does it hurt?

I'd had a few scares so have had breast screening (ultrasound and biopsy for me as too young for a mammogram) and had a colonoscopy and the camera down one as well. So I'm on regular screening early due to things they found.

If it's routine screening then don't worry, just see it as a positive that they are keeping an eye so if anything does come up they can catch it and sort it.

Even if they find something, it doesn't mean it's anything bad, most things aren't and are pretty common like fibrous adenomas and polyps.

Just see it as a necessary evil like smear tests.
Drisgirl - it's not painful just uncomfortable. I had one done recently. You just have to place your boob on a flat surface and then another one gets put on top so your boob is sandwiched. Not really painful but they have to do each one top and bottom then sideways.

Poor girl who did mine must see all shapes and sizes all day so it's not embarrassing. You should be told not to wear deoderant before as this could affect the picture.

Good luck.
Last time the nurse said to me I've seen many funny shapes and sizes - I think she was refering to me
Just think it's only a short procedure which could save your life.
Decide to treat yourself aftewards with something, even if its just a take away in the evening, it is still something to look forward to after the event.
I once saw a joke about how it is like slamming your boob in the fridge, imagine this when having it done and I hope it makes you smile when you realise it isn't as bad :o)

You will be fine..... and look forward to that take away :o)

You know what I am, not sqeamish really but I am about the results.

Its like putting you life into someone elses hands.

I am scared but if it stops anything nasty I will be forever indebted to them.

Do you all get this at 50 cos even in Scotland it goes by Health Boards and I know this for a fact so guess I am lucky really.

Should be mandatory for everyone -shoul she wish to take up the offer.

Clio -I didnt know about the deoderant -should maybe read an digest the letter insted of burying my head in the sand/

I will deff get back and give you an update even if its to help another poor quivering wreck like me.

Thanks to everyone-I have calmed my jets now or you lovely peeps have XXX !!
Dont worry Dris, you will be fine Clio describes it well, its just a bit of pressure on your boobs when sandwich it between the two plates. There are only four pictures taken and you will be in and out in 10 minutes. The girls are very good at putting you at your ease.

Its a wonderful service and I wish every woman would take it up

Let us know how you get on

It's no problem . I am 61 and they have sent for me every two years since I was 50 . I can understand your fear . I had to go and hold a friends hand !
To be honest I have never had any trouble with it .It does depend on the size of your bazooms . I think the more well endowed you are the easier it it is .I am lucky :)No pulling and stretching .))
I call it the pancake maker ..haha
Go and get it done .Grit your teeth and lets be glad we have all these screening thingys. They knock the NHS but they are the briiliant .At 60 we now get this bowel cancer screening thing .I was dubious as you have to do all this malarkey with poo ..but ......if it saves my life ..can't be bad

I do appreciate it but I have to get it done and dusted -bless the lot of ya and I will lt you all kno how I fare.

Dont think what all your posts have meant to me -its sometimes sems like its alien abut at the end of the day we all face the same fears .Thank you each and every one xx

You're right it is the waiting especially if you think the staff pull a face or something or they do something different from last time. Your mind goes into overdrive.

When I went with a friend she said 1 of the nurses had a strange look on her face, after my friend got dressed she asked the other nurse as she'd seen the 1st nurse hurry away if they'd seen something (not sure how she thought that was possible though) and the nurse said no she was just dying for a wee.

During those few mins my friend had practically decided on her funeral

the others are right Dris - it can be a bit painful for some, because your boobs get squashed up, but others find it alright. By the way, you're not obliged to go to any breast screening that you're invited along to, but it's worth it. My best friend went along as a routine job, and yes....she had what we all dread. She's doing fine though, because it was caught in time. x

That is precisley how im feeling -doesnt help that one of mates got a routine one as her mum died due to brest cancer and lo and behods she phoned just as she got home to say they had found a'bad' cells and within a week she has a mastectomuy as it was 'aggresive'.

That is what is frightening me -he is fine BTW -dodnt need chemo nor radio as they caught it the eraly stages =she iw on tamoxifen (sP?) for life ans he has now had a breasy augmentation.

On the other hand i knew a beautful lassie and she died at the age of 28.,Cant say more as its upsetting

Im not being maudling honestlyl -I would rather not know if truth be told
It doesn't exactly hurt but it's not pleasant. Having said that, it's good to do because of the benefits to your overall health.
Question Author
Thank you Lucy especially as my last post was full of tired typos.

I dont think its gonna be pleasant but I have a very high pain threshold -pain is nowt its the results
.
Hey now - imagine how I felt last year when I went and had half of my innards out, and yes, waiting for the results was horrendous. Luckily they came back much better than I'd expected, but had I not had the op when I did, I was told that the cysts would've turned cancerous, or burst. Either way, I might not've been here now, and with 2 little ones to care for, I was beside myself.
Most mamogram results come back as OK, so try and look at it that way. IF things needed to be looked at, then the sooner you get it done, the better. x
