Constant thirst

I am constantly thirsty, no matter what i drink or when i drink it i am always thirsty. I don't have heating on that often in my house so it's not like i'm hot or anything like that. I just have a constant dry mouth and a dizzy feeling. Had it for a few months but it is starting to get worse. I will make a doctors appointment but i wasn't sure if it was just something that would pass. Any advice guys?

My mum was exactly the same she was diognosed as being pre diabetic,Shes not completely diabetic she takes a tablet that im sorry i cant remember the name of but it keeps it controlled her dizzy head was put down to stress and slightly high blood pressure,But shes fine and carries on has normal,hope this helped a bit.

I think Boots and Lloyds do free diabetes tests, it sounds to me like it could be that but obviously your doc would be the best bet.  I don't want to scare you but I had a friend in school who kept assuming it would pass and dropped into a coma, he came out of it and is totally fine now (apart from being insulin dependent and sceliac sufferer but don't know if that is connected).  Go see your GP!

Cheers guys, i will go see my GP, don't worry! I was just hoping someone would say it could be something other than diabetes. That sounds a bit worrying. :o(

if the doctor says you havnt got diabetes and he sits and grins at you and says it must just be normal..to be thirsty press him for a vitamin deficiency test ..as in a blood test  mullein

It is one of the classic symptoms of diabetes, but can be caused by other things (speaking as a diabetic).  Lethargy and irritability can also be indicators.  Your GP can do a blood sugar and urine tests and identify whether they are abnormal. It's something you should do soon, as well controlled diabetes allows a normal life.  Uncontrolled diabetes will cause serious problems over time.  Let us know how you get on and don't worry either way.

Cheers mullein, i will do. I hate it when doctors act smug and just say it's normal. I hardly go to the doctor because of this and often feel like i'm in the way or wasting their time when i do go. I shouldn't feel like this i know but it's a very small doctors and there is always a lot of people waiting to be seen and you are always rushed through. Still, i will ask for the vitamin deficiency test. Thanks!

I have had a constant feeling of tiredness no matter how much sleep i get. I will mention this to the doctor as well if you think it might be related Bangkok. I'll let you know how i get on, although it will probably be a week or more til i get an appointment round here.

Mullein is right , if they dismiss diabetes, make sure they offer you further investigation.  Also mention any other symptoms (e.g. sweating, itching, nausea) however insignificant you might think they are. Thirst & tiredness was something completely different from diabetes in my case.

i am a diabetic and before i was diagnosed i was waking up about 4 times a night and drinking a pint of water and going to the loo. typical symptoms i had are, weight loss, felt weak and tired, craved sugary stuff like fruit juice. my long vision went coz of the sugar in the back of my eye. i had days off coz i couldnt get out of bed.  I have 4 injections a day and have done for 7 years.  dont even think about it now i live a normal life except i have to carry a pack of sweets with me all the time.
