Hairdressing is a personal service.....men get ear & brow trims; ladies have odd long beard hairs plucked, eye-brows colored etc. These are seen by the stylist because of the close scrutiny of a clients face and not usually priced for.
If you are happy with the finish and you 'depend' on your stylist for your image then show your appreciation by tipping. Its the salon owner who gets the 'booked' price not the employee!

I'm really stupid. Even if a hairdresser does a bad job, I tip them. It's almost embarrassing the way they hang around the till when you're paying, as if to say, where's my tip then. Isn't it weird the way we tip certain people, but not others. They're all being paid after all. But we tip dustmen and the postie at Christmas, so why not the supermarket check out person. The whole tipping thing is crazy. Employers should pay people a decent wage in the first place. Mind you, it would be nice to be able to afford the occasional hair 'doo' these days, but finding the money for rent, food and power bills is difficult enough at the moment.
ive found this very interesting as I am a hairdresser!! Personally, I would NEVER expect a tip off anyone, but when clients do tip, to me, it is a confidence boost as you feel you have done something right and made them happy. If someone doesnt tip, my paranoia tells me they weren\'t happy with their hair. And I only ever hang around at the till, as we are trained to open and close the visit, by greeting at the door and leaving at the door!
Also, hairdressers, or the majoirty are NOT on a good wage, but thats no need for you to tip i just wanted to point that out! I am a senior hairdresser and wages are poor in a busy city salon.
To me who I tip throughout the year is a personal thing, I will tiip my beautician when she does a lovely job, my waiter/ress, when Im pleased with my service and anyone else who i feel has gone out of their way to be nice to me......
