Hi Guys, wonder if anyone can help me with this.

I\'ve had a round lump of extra bone on the back of my left hand (about the size of a small marble, just above the wrist joint) for years, i used to think it was a ganglion, but it doesnt move, it just feels like part of the bone on my hand, rock hard..it never used to bother me, now over the past few months it\'s really aching, it makes my fingers ache, and it hurts when i type for a long time. It also seems to ache more when it\'s cold and when i settle into bed at night, which is a right nuisence. Ive been \'googling\' and it seems as though i\'ve got something called a \'carpal boss\' , i was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this? im 27 and it sems this condition may be linked to arthritus and it quite common in the over 50\'s! im confused...

thanks

Yes....it could be an Osteoma (benign tumour of bone) it could be an osteophyte (unlikely in one so young) and it could be an excess of ossification of the styloid process of the wrist.

An X-Ray should sort that out and whatever the diagnosis it is not serious.......no big deal.

Hi this def does sound like a ganglion I have got one exactly where you describe yours. Mine is also hard and feels like a piece of bone. I have had mine for a few years and the doctor said to me that if it does not hurt, you can leave it alone but if it starts to hurt there is a small operation they can do to remove it. Go back to your doctor and im sure they will get it sorted for you.
It sounds to me like a carpal/metacarpal boss. My husband had the same thing, had a hard lump on the back of his hand, didn't bother him at all until one day he was prising up some carpet rods and ended up in a lot of pain. Eventually had op to remove it.
SMP.....I agree.

Ok, so doc thinks it could be a cyst that i've had for years, and beacuse its not had the space to 'grow' its calcified, but she's made me an appt with a specialist to get it checked out anyway... i dont think its a cyst thats calcified, just because it's never ever been soft like a cyst? it's always been like a bone, just now its painful.
place tin foil over swelling & cover with elastic support - 2w should show a result? Works on animals with mineral shortage.
fiona...thanks for the feedback.
