I always thought that they were a subconscious way of letting me know I needed to deal with the situation and stop putting it off any longer!
There are quite a few reasons and explanations for nightmares if you click on this link:

If you are a follower of Freud, then you have nightmares because of repressed sexual desires. If you are a follower of Jung, then your nightmares are simply subconsciously balancing out the conscious side of your personality - you must therefore have a happy life when awake. Most modern analysts believe that dreams and nightmares are just random images thrown up as the brain processes information it has received during the day. And I read an article recently (I can't remember the details) in which one psychoanalyst claimed that the brain simulates dangerous scenarios so that we can be prepared to deal with similar situations in real life. There will be lots of peopole out of a job if the real cause and meanings of dreams is ever discoveres.
I definately don't agree that hurt and worry in waking life is the cause of nightmares.
My g/f has nightmares from time to time, always about losing me or not being able to find me. I'm definately liking Jung's theory because she is honestly happier now than she has ever been, her whole family see it, and I tell you it makes me feel very good.
