Sqad urgent advice required
37 Answers
Hi Sqad,my 20 year old daughter has just phoned me to say her doctor has phoned and told her that her kidneys are failing. Her symptoms have been lack or urination (or urge to urinate) for two days, extreme lethargy, morning paralysis and lack of appetite. Any idea what could cause this in an otherwise healthy and fit 20 year old young woman? She had a reflux kidney problem when she was a baby but has had no problems from that for the last 18 years. She is going to the doctors again as an urgent case in 10 minutes and from there to hospital.

daffy...difficult I know but try and calm down and not imagine diagnoses and situations which may be distorted in you own mind.
The situation is that we have a 20yr old, with urinary problems, previously healthy, with a pulsating mass in her abdomen. Could be many things, but she will almost certainly need an aortic angiogram to exclude an aortic aneurysm affecting one or both of the renal arteries. Uncommon in a 20yr old, but needs excluding.
I need your help on B&S so keep fit as seeing all the "big deals," I wish that I had stayed in bed ;-)

Just spoke to my daughter and she is intent on discharging herself from hospital :-( They've still got her on the CDU and the place is full of dementia patients who are screaming and shouting constantly,I could hear them whilst I was on the phone to her,it sounded like bedlam!
She has had the catheter removed but still hasn't managed to urinate (since last night),they are giving her an enema because they think she is constipated as well. She has had several xrays but not been told the results yet and they think the pulsating lump in her abdomen may be a hernia. Her blood tests all came back normal for kidney function so we are hoping that was a mis-diagnosis on the part of the gp.....it doesn't explain why she can't wee though. She is still very lethargic and nauseous but is determined to go home as they won't let her children visit her on the CDU.

Right.
So we can rule out kidney failure, she IS producing urine, so the next question is why can't she pass her urine?
Aneurysm never was a likely cause.
A hernia is a common problem in a you female....usually an inguinal hernia and this could cause urinary bladder neck obstruction.
It is looking better for your daughter by the hour.

Spoke to my daughter again a few minutes ago and she has been convinced not to discharge herself from hospital, the ward staff are allowing her older child to visit (22 months) but not the 6 month old baby as he would be at risk of infection from other patients. She tried telling the nurses she had managed to wee (she hasn't) so that they will allow her to go home but being wise old birds they didn't believe her and have insisted she show evidence and given her a jug to wee into.lol
I hope it is psychological Sqad, but I doubt it,if she could wee she would as that seems to be the only barrier to her being allowed home at the moment. When she was catheterised last night she produced over a litre of urine but when they removed the catheter she went back to being unable to wee and she still doesn't feel any urge to go either. They are going to give her an outpatient appointment for the lump (possible hernia) and tablets to control her nausea and dizzy spells.
I am very much relieved that it doesn't seem to be a kidney problem,we had enough of that when she was a baby, she was hospitalised with kidney and urinary tract infections many times from the age of 8 months to around 2 years old.

I'm so glad its nothing serious - although I don't know what hernia's do? At least her kidney function isn't impaired which is good news (as I don't think its good news if the kidneys aren't working) I'm so sorry for my lack of medical knowledge at a time like this but I do feel for your daughter not being able to have her children visit however very glad that one is now permitted to visit and that she is not going to discharge herself. I continue to wish you all the best x
Another update.....my daughter discharged herself from hospital last night :-(
She is managing to urinate again but only a tiny bit at a time. The abdominal lump is definitely not a hernia, the doctor said it is her aorta and it is slightly enlarged and in the wrong place.lol They said her heart is just in a slightly different place to where it normally is but she was probably born with it that way. She is under strict instruction to return to hospital if she takes a turn for the worse again.
Thank you everybody for your kind words.
