As there are many types of contraceptive pills available how does the doctor assess which one they should give you?

it would be based on your age, medical conditions, and which you would prefer. what's suitable for one isn't suitable for all.
your medical notes, then its trial and error until you find the right one
Some medical conditions and factors like weight and blood pressure can exclude some types.

Some people go for added extras such as Dianette which can help with acne.
family history
your GP might also take your age into consideration.
They usually put you on the cheapest one then wait til you have problems with it!

That is really what has happened to most girls I know (but maybe the age they mostly are when they start on it rather than cost?) but everyone I speak to has been put on Microgynon30 to start with then a couple of years down the line have had problems of one kind or another then been swapped to one that suits people who expereince certain side effects!

Ah yes, the implant, they keep asking me if I want that but grosses me out a bit so am staying away! Enjoy the wine, yummy!
