Reading the shampoo post I starting wondering if there was conditioner when I was younger. I dont remember mum washing my hair with it, just shampoo. And I'm sure that the combing of my hair wouldnt have been as painful as I remember? Was it just coz I was a child or was conditioner not about then? (about 25 years ago) I also remember going swimming with the school and I'd forgot my shampoo and gave me some of hers and it was 2 in one. First time I's used conditioner.
I'm a good deal older than most of you and in the late 50s I worked in 'Timothy Whites & Taylors' the chemists (remember them?) Sometimes I was put on the Toileteries Counter We sold shampoo's in sachets I remember Vaseline shp,Sylvakrin, Amami Brunette & Blonde,& Yes, even then there was conditioner 'Caress' in a tube.
But, going further back still My Mum used Rinso on my hair.
Not half Lottie - that heater really did emit a pong that lingered for ages. The old geyser used to frighten the life out of us as children - Houston we have lift off. Bath towels were always white and fluffy too - warmed by the open coal fire before application. I can now see the first dressing gown I remember - emerald green with red piping. I had better go to bed.
I remember all these things so well - better than I remember what I did yesterday. Sign of old age!!
Going back to the bath and warm towels and drying in front of the fire - we then went up to freezing cold bedrooms with ice on the inside of the windows and tried to get warm under numerous blankets, feather eiderdowns and half a dozen coats. I still hate warm bedrooms (not so keen on ice on the inside of windows though)
I liked helping my gran to put the clothes through the wringer in the back yard. Lovely job on cold winter's mornings. The hankies were all put in a big old boiler on top of the stove
mrs.c - ouch - poor you ♥
Lottie - ever slept in a feather bed? Used to have to jump high to land in the middle of it so as too maintain maximum comfort for the whole night. Rag rugs on lino floors and good old hot water bottles - until they perished - usually in the bed and only when the water had reached freezing temerature!
Oh Lottie, I too remember thoise days, the bed covers were so heavy that we couldn't move! blankets, eiderdowns, coats and more coats!...........I too still hate a warm bedroom!...............Happy days though!.................
Oh yes, I have slept on feather beds. My grandparents had a lovely feather bed and it was a joy to snuggle up with them in the mornings. They kept their feather mattress until the very end of their lives. They never would give it up. I remember my Mum buying me a carpet for my bedroom when I was about 13. A carpet square that is and it was quite thin - blue with pink flowers on it. Luxury!!
Nah Naz - only ever got up in the morning to use the guzunder.
Look what you have done with this thread 4get - we are now showing our age for all to see!
Lottie I remember using the rag rug in my bedroom like a skate to reach all parts of the room without stepping on the icy lino! But didn't it take an age to make a feather bed? Arms like a gorilla after all that shaking.
Never went in the bedroom unless it was bedtime or you were ill. And when you were ill you had to stay in bed and weren't allowed up. Bed was the only warm place.
Bedrooms those days weren't exactly places you wanted to be during the day.
