Hopi ear candling
24 Answers
What do you think about this, I went slightly deaf overnight 12 months ago, specialist said fluid around eardrum, suggested having gromits fitted, don't fancy that. Saw article about Hopi candles, never heard of it before, has anyone any experience of this. Thanks

Grommets in the ear is nothing to worry about. Lots of children have this procedure done for conditions like glue ear.

Have this looked into carefully. My daughter-in-law suffered the same symptoms as you have, only to find she had what is commonly known as CSF leakage. (Cerebral-Spinal Fluid leakage!) They thought she needed a gromit fitted also!!She has since had her operation, which entailed opening a flap at the side of the head and placing a patch over the leakage point. It is, seemingly, a common occurrence to leak into the nose, BUT, more rare if the fluid leaks into the ear. Please take note of what I am saying and speak to your doctor for referal to a neuro-surgeon, if only to put your mind at rest. She is well now by the way, thankfully!
First.......ignore the scary post by sag.....it is inappropriate in you case.
Secondly I cannot establish any link between ear candling and fluid in the ear (presumably middle ear?
Grommit tube insertion is no big deal ans id done under general anaesthetic as a day case.
Let me know the nature of your symptoms e.g impaired hearing, one ear or both ears ect and I could then give you a better opinion.

sqad...........unless you're a qualified person on the subject being spoken about, I think it rather rude of you to tell carandrog to ignore my 'scary' post. Had my daughter-in-law listened to someone like you she would have been in a serious state by now. Her ENT surgeon wanted to put a gromit in thinking this was all that was need. Thankfully she was persuaded to have a neuro sugeons verdict on it by her doctor. This all took place in New Zealand by the way. It is better therefore to at least look into it as to have had a gromit fitted would have caused horrendous problems. Better to be safe than sorry I say. Maybe a gromit IS all that's needed but..........who knows!!! I give this advice with a good heart.
sqad................I did not mean for my first correspondence to come across as scary. My intention was one, which having my daughter-in-law starting with the same symptoms as carandrog, that brought another outlook to the problem. Reading through carandrog's message again, I am wondering how you have come to the conclusion that you have by what the person wrote.. My daughter-in-law was also told that she had fuid around the eardrum after going deaf some 12 months ago. The ENT specialist told her she would have to have a gromit fitted also. She had no other symptoms only that which the writer had. Her GP, an avid reader on the subject, wasn't convinced, therefore refering her to see a consultant neuro-surgeon . Thankfully he did. So I do apologise if you still think that I was out of place in saying what I did. Like I have already stated, it was done with good intentions and not meant to be alarmist. Good luck on your future anyway and a merry Christmas to you and yours!
sag..... apology not needed but humbly accepted.
My point was that CSF presenting as a middle ear effusion has been recorded, but exceedingly rare......a Consultant ENT surgeon would be lucky to see one case in 40years of consultative practice and even rarer to be seen on AB.
Merry Christmas to you and yours also.
