Hopi ear candling
24 Answers
What do you think about this, I went slightly deaf overnight 12 months ago, specialist said fluid around eardrum, suggested having gromits fitted, don't fancy that. Saw article about Hopi candles, never heard of it before, has anyone any experience of this. Thanks

You may be very interested in the following report on my daughter-in-law. She had Spontaneous CSF and NOT the usual Trauma CSF. She was told by the surgeon that this was extremely rare. She had no signs of any trauma and they have put it down to, what they think is a birth defect. It was a first case for her neuro-surgeon and her consultanat ENT surgeon was in on the operation as he had never seen this before. According to my son, this pair were both excited about doing the operation!! It seems, like you have stated yourself, so rare, that there are only 500 cases recorded worldwide. When they went into the skull they found the tegmen bone transparent also, so they fixed this at the same time. I hope you haven't minded all I am pointing out to you......in fact I've rather enjoyed our little chats! Thank you and I do hope I haven't bored you with it all.

sag....you havent bored me at all...as you know CSF leaks are often seen with head injuries following fractured skull and also rarely seen with infections following the erosion of the skull with what is known as cholesteatoma, but as you quite rightly say, leaks due to birth defects are extremely rare and one has more chance of winning the lottery than developing a CSF middle ear birth leak.
I would be interested to know how the ENT surgeon differentiated CSF in the middle ear, from the overwhelming commoner type?

sqad.....I will be able to answer the question you ask after I speak to my son. I believe it would be better to open a new heading between us when next I write instead of using this present link; that is if you agree. I am also interested in what role exactly to do hold in the medical world..........just being a little nosey! As my son is in New Zealand it may be a day or two before I am next in touch. King regards.
