what does it mean when someone is coughing up 'lung casts' ?

I have no idea.

Never seen it or experienced it.

Very rare and so is the disorder that produces it.

Fungus infection?

hollie.....sorry didn´t see your second question. They "things" coughed up that take the exact shape of the parts of the lung.......as if they were "plaster casts"

Still don´t know what would cause them;-)
I think you (or the person to whom you are refering) may have miss heard. Nothing comes up when you google 'lung casts'
No! no! Count......I dont care what does or doesnt come up on Googling............"lung casts DO exist as a clinical entity.

its not me who has this, its my friends 4yr old grandaughter and she is very poorly. She needs an operation but she isnt strong enough at the moment.
