whenever I have a manicure the varnish stays on forever. When I do it at home it chips within a couple of days, even tho I use base and top coats. Why is this ? What is the best base and top coat to buy? OPI?

what varnish are you using?
I have used OPI , it,s quite good but I think that Nails Inc is the best I have ever used it stays on me for nearly a fortnight,I buy it direct from their website and you can also get it from QVC if you don,t have a local stockist-better value that way too!
Revlon, - The best on the market. IMO

folly and jemisa, are you talking about the make of the actual colour varnish, or the base and top coat ? I am using all three from M&S at the moment ..
Can you not buy the products they use where you have your manicure or check the brand and order online?
I was refering to all the Nails inc products and colours, they do several type of base coat ,Kensington is one of the names for that
and the top coat is Albert Bridge
I like Revlon but just bought Maybelline, which says "lasts up to 7 days" on the bottle, and it did!

well, about 5, but I didn't use a top coat.

don't buy No 7, it's really rubbish.

OPI is good, but I have also found that Max Factor Nailfinitity (the one on the kind of slopey bottle) stays on my nails well!
