Why do women get offended when you ask their age? Men don't!

I don't mind at all - I'm 57 & always being mistaken for our Granchildren's Mummy!

They won't mind me saying that - they love it.

Possibly because women of a certain age spend a lot of time and  money trying to look younger than they do. Men seem to age gracefully and ruggedly. Women do not.

I know what you mean Scarlett - I know women who spend so much money on beauty treatments, trying to retain their youthful looks. But if it makes them feel more confident & happier, then that's their choice.

Fortunately, I inherited my 'youthful' genes from my parents - along with a little help fom Boots No. 7 moisteriser of course!

Just to say that a lot of men are a bit coy about it too - they dont want to be considered old either! (in case you wondered...female, 23)

Scarlett where are all these men that age gracefully and ruggedly.  Most of the ones I know don't care what they look like when they get past 45 and don't make any attempt to make themselves look nice.  At least women try to look nice.  (I am 57 and don't look it - and want a toy boy)

I never hide my age. Im 57 this year and proud of it! I had a compliment just today off a student DR,she thought I was about 46! Lovely girl.

I am lucky to look a lot younger than I do, as well.  It runs in our family.  My mother has virtually no wrinkles at 84.  However, if you are young at heart and enjoy life then this will show on your face.  I am really proud to admit I am 57.  What's wrong with being 57 - it's only a number.

I don't get offended. I was the big 40 last year and I'm not bothered about it one bit. I think it's possibly the older generation that pretend to get offended because 'that's what you're supposed to do when cheeky young people ask such intrusive questions'. My mum (bless her heart) always used to tell me she was 21 every year and I never knew how old she really was until she was taken from me.

 

As for men not caring ... I agree with FP, that a lot of them (but not all of them) don't care what they look like because it's just acceptable for them to be like that, but it's not for women; most women do care, so they don't get into that situation. The difference is, unlike 50 years ago, we don't do it for men any more; we do it for us, because we feel happier ourselves, not because he will feel happier if we look good.

I am not bothered either. Now nearing the big 50, I have a few age lines etc, but it's how you think that matters.

I'd rather grow old disgracefully than act my age all the time!

I don't mind being asked my age, I'm 38. But people say I look younger.

There�s a strange paradox that women who look younger than their age actually don�t mind people knowing their true age and enjoy revelling in the fact that they look much younger. This is also borne out by some of the answers here. I know I enjoy it as I�m 32 but get mistaken for 24/25.  Funny thing is, when I was in my late teens and early 20s people always thought I was older.

I had noticed that too Miss Zippy, nobody has posted "I'm 57 and have crows feet, laughter lines and bleeding lips and I look about 62".  I'm 22 so I guess it doesn't really matter for my generation, but I always looked a lot older than I was I think that has more to do with being fairly tall and busty from a younger age though.  My nan is ashamed of telling people how old she is, in fact she's quite proud and none of the women in my family seem to be worried by it.

Yes Miss Zippy, that's natural. No woman will like to say that they are this particular age but look older and less attractive.

I'm exactly the same as the others - I'm 30 but don't mind telling people as I usually get mistaken for early 20s.

I don't think any older woman would like to admit to looking old or haggered. Let's face it though, some are more fortunate than others!
