jonah........are you sure that it is an OVER active thyroid.....most unusual in a man..........and UNDER active thyroid is far more common.

Any chance of getting the blood results for me?
Jonah - if his Thyroid is overactive, he would also have been prescribed another tablet like Carbimazole or similar to cut the thyroid activity down. The Propranalol is to help with the palpatations.
Den.....my suspicion is that the GP has misinterpreted the blood tests............I stand to be corrected.
If it was underactive though Sqad - would he still have prescribed Propranalol ?
my mother suffers from hypo-thyroidism and if left untreated, it causes all sorts of minor issues from weightloss to palpitations, sweating etc etc

Propranalol is the base medication and he will need measuring from time to time as if the body changes and he goes hyper, that causes issues. Side effects are sometime disrupted sleep, nightmares, weight gain

Sqad a lot of folk get consfused between hyper and hypo, could just be a patient mix-up of terminology.
Den.....what the hell has propranalol got to to do with abnormality of thyroid function...NONE

I would just like to see those thyroid blood tests.
DT as I have mentioned to Den,,,,,propranolol has bu99er all to do with hypothxyroidism.

If your mother has hypothyroidism, then she should be taking thyroxine.
Sqad - I was prescribed Propranalol many years ago when my thyroid went over active again - I never took it. Just stuck with the Carbimazole.
Doesn`t hyperthyroidism do something to the adrenaline receptors so they prescribe beta blockers to block the adrenaline? Please don`t tell me off if I`m wrong :-)
Den mmmmmmmmmmm! this don´t add up......dont add up at all.

My bet?.....the guy has an underactive thyroid.
237SJ......;-)........I would never tell you off.
If he was underactive - surely he would have a slow pulse rate/heartbeat, so no need for Propranalol.
Den......Exactly............and there the devil resides.
den.......hypo, yes a slower heart rate..................hyper, rapid heart rate, palpitations.
I know Annie - I suffered an overactive from the age of 10 years old. Had thyroid removed 5 years ago.
Den..... you know what I think?

The blood tests show a high level of TSH and the GP has misinterpreted the significance.

Hi sqad how would I be able to show you the results?
I have seen he as all the symptoms of an over active thyroid I/E breathing problems, weight loss, shaking, palpitations, restless legs not sleeping an feeling nervous.. The doctor said it was more common in women.. Do you think propranalol is not the right medication for him? The doc said it was to slow his breathing down. He does have to visit her again Monday what do you think he should ask her? xx
hi jonah. i truely believe your brother should follow his doctors advice,,eg, she examined him, she saw the test results. she prescribed medication. she arranged to see him again at the surgery. keep us informed.
jonah.....if it is overactive, then Propanolol is the right treatment until further studies are performed.

All I would need to know from the blood tests were his TSH levels which your brother could get from phoning the surgery.

.
anne......nobody has suggested that he shouldn't take the doctors advice.
