just writing a peice on a patients social and spiritual needs whilst in my care and how to manage them,....patient is 53 yr old female with breast cancer. admitted with sepsis.

im saying, social she will have to be barrier nursed, but constantly reassured and also allowed visitors but who will have to glove up etc aswell. family will be informed and kept reassured. she will be reassured that this isnt the cancer getting worse but simply a side effect of her chemo, spiritually offer a preist or religous leader, offer councelling and involve other team members like the said councellors and possibly cancer nurse specialists?? anyone else any idea sxxxxx

from your original question It was not clear . . . . nor stated . . . that this was a fictional scenario nor that it was for uni . . . . . I now have a fuller understanding of the premis of the question . . . . .

but thanks for your input.
Good luck tomorrow - with only 6 months to go, are you on long placement soon?

thank you all!!

yeah box ive had a long long slog of theory, few more weeks left then im out on two 5-7 wks placements ( cant remember!) and finally my management placement where i hope to go to the community again! that will be 10 wks i think!!

then job time! lol and they are few and far between, i heard the guys just qualified got contracted 22.5 hrs a week though so i hope that that scheme is kept up!! cos 22.5 is better than 0!! :0) x
Socially....look at the effectts of isolation,, there is research out there on the time spent in nursing interactions with barrier nursed versus the normal patient population, feelings of being unclean etc... alternative means of contact has barrier room got intercom etc...should it have? that sort of thing....

Spiritual... remeber tha patient who is isolated has more time to ponder.... Def offer the chaplain or appropriate, but also be aware that she may come up with the sort of questions you might feel uncomfortable answering... as even if she is expected to recover she will have been reminded of the fragility of her condition.......
rowan. did you catch the post from welshyorkie ?
yes, we've spoken and exchanged texts...I've offered help as I am in the hospital and have experience in the area and live nearby e.g fetching stuff from shops etc.... he's got his sons with him. I was concerned he'd be up here alone which is often the case.. I think my main job will be passing messages to and fro....I think its helping to know people are wishing them well
thanks, its good to know he has family around him.
