Dating Site - genuine people?
82 Answers
My question is kind of along these lines: if someone is on a dating site and is pretending to be someone or something they are not what are they actually getting out of it?
I have been exchanging mails with a man who is an italian businessman, an engineer who travels the world. Bottom line is that he wants to buy me presents, says he has fallen for me and basically he seems too good to be true in the things he says to me. He says he is a widow and that I now have his heart etc.
Im dubious until I actually meet him. What would be the point of someone pretending to be someone or something they are not? Surely after I've met him I will know whether he is genuine or not?

Khandro, some people don't have to go on dating sites, they just do because it's another perfectly viable way of meeting people, and why not!
Liquidspace, if his only fault so far is being a bit too needy and wanting to buy you stuff then take it as that, something that raises suspicion.
I don't see the benefit in assuming anyone trying to be nice to you is in it...

Well Jackthehat - that wont happen to me as I really would not , let alone could not, give anything to anyone. Doesnt matter how they think they had "bought" me or won me over or emotionally manipulated me. If everything was going well and then they suddenly needed something they simply wouldn't get it from me!
there's a trail a mile wide of lonely hearts, who have been scammed, and most said exactly what you have said, it won't happen to me, sadly it does.
As others have said why would anyone who is rich, firstly advertise that fact, most don't, certainly not to a complete stranger, unless a walter mitty, living a double life. Meet by all means if that is what you really want, but i wouldn't accept anything but a drink.

I don't see the benefit in assuming anyone trying to be nice to you is in it for some dodgy reason, but it's worth realising that it's a possibility just to keep you on guard.

Can you really fall for someone in 3 weeks over emails?
These emails must have been pretty intense.
And I would say the majority of wealthy men who go on dating sites do not brag about their wealth because they don't want to attract gold diggers. The ones that do probably just want sex...or are lying.
