so he's a miserable young git who doesn't talk but hates everything except hockey? I'm not too clear why you want to impress someone like this; shouldn't you at least suggest he meets you halfway? Sounds like you're doing all the loving and he's doing none. This could end in tears. You probably shouldn't go into a relationship thinking you can reform someone or turn their life around - that's not really what love is about. If he's got reasons for being depressive maybe they would respond to therapy, but unless you're in the healthcare business yourself I'm not at all sure you should be taking this on as your responsibility.
Anyway... big meal out? Does he like films? Theatre? Are there big hockey matches you could get him tickets for? Has he got friends or family you could quietly ask about what else he does in his spare time, what music he listens to, what telly he watches?
Don't make it too expensive, though, it'll just look like you're trying to buy his love. Good luck.
