engagemnt ring value

I have a friend whose live-in girlfriend has told him he should spend a month's wages on her engagement ring. This is supposed to be an "old tradition". Has anyone else heard of this; it's news to me??

Its not how much the ring costs, but how much sentiment is behind it.
a cheaper ring bought with good intentions and a lot of a thought gone into it, is much better than a big sparkler just so everyone knows that a lot of money has been spent.
expensive does not mean better

tbh, i think that any woman who tells her boyfriend what he has to spend on a ring is just being greedy. Does a garish 2000 ring have more love behind it than a carefully chosen 200 ring?
Tell him to buy her the ugliest ring he can and get a fake receipt for a months wages, see if she shows it off to all her mates as being an expensive ring rather than a beautiful token of love

there used to be an advert on the tv and cinema for debeers diamonds which said how else can a months wages last a lifetime
i had a crap job and my fiancees ring cost me 3 months wages. i wasn't planning on spending that much but i was trawling the jewellery quarter in birmingham and got carried away. the one i picked was like one that she had pointed out to me in a jewellery shop before when we had been looking around together. never been engaged before so wanted to get her a really nice one.
