Gap year

My boyfriend left this afternoon for a 6 month long gap year, we have been together for 10 months and decided we both wanted stay together during the time apart. I was totally open to potentially breaking up as it is his year to have the time of his lide but he was convinced that staying together was the right thing to do.
Im planning on visiting him half way through the 6months for 3 weeks or so which I suppose will break it up hugely. Do you think this was the right decision to stay together?

However, ive spent the day crying my eyes out and dont know what to do?! Has anyone else ever experienced a situation like this and could give any advice? I feel so lost.
