why dont you say youre English and not Chinese. so youre not giving nothing to her family. just give them 300 instead! thats a lot over there.

although... if youre celebrating it in a resturant you will get loads of 'lai see' (red envolope- contains lots of money) off her family and friends.(and urs too)- make sure you get them off your inlaws after the celebration cos the inlaws takes all the lai see before the guest gets seated cos they sign their names on a cloth with a brush (bit like a guest book) and hands over the lai see to them.
If you were in Africa you would have to throw in some cows and a mercedes benz as well.
Then if she runs off and leaves you or dies you get to take the younger sister.
give them half, take the father to one side and explain about all the expenses u have with the baby on the way and you will cough up the rest at a later date when u can afford.
OTHERWISE REFUSE TO GO, Chinese hate to loose face.
has your wife got any grasp of your finances ? or does she think that all Europeans are rich ? did she marry u for love or love of money ? put her in her place [ kindly] now otherwise these demands will continue all your married life, wise up now and take a stand.
good luck
