Hi,
When becoming engaged is it common practice to buy a gift for your new fiance as a kind of 'Thank you for asking me to marry you, I love you' thing or should the 'YES' be a gift in itself?! What have any of you done in this situation? Thanks.

Wouldnt think so!
Ah now; a duck billed platypus. Much more interesting than a cat.
have never been engaged but have never heard of buying a gift to thank someone for asking you.
Not in my book! The guy buys the girl an engagement ring if that's what you want, but otherwise that's it!
PS love your platypus!
Wouldn't do any harm. Don't think I did right enough, but we went on holiday a few months later.
I bought my fiancee a ring. She should've been grateful for that!!
I've never heard of it either but if you think they would love it then go for it!

How did he pop the question? You will have to excuse me but I have a decided lack of a love life so going for the vicarious version :)
I think a night of wild passion should suffice.
Mrs grumpyface says don't waste your money on unnecessary gifts, you're going to need it all for the wedding...!
Jenna - vicarious = no messy divorce!!!

Emoire, there is no need to buy a gift for your fiance, your acceptance should be enough. You could buy a small token for your wedding, but again not necessary.

Why not just go out for a romantic intimate meal in a few weeks time, just to spend some time together?
I dont think its common practice, but its a really nice thought....if he is gonna spend a fortune on a ring, then a special gift from you to him sounds really romantic and lovely to me...
In fact, sod the engagement, I could just do with a night of wild passion....
Or a romantic/naughty weekend away to celebrate?

True Barmaid!
I think a BJ would probably suffice
When I got engaged to husband No.1 I bought him a very expensive watch, which he had engraved with our engagement date...........I think he sold it after the divorce.
Presumably there was a limited market though Craft!!!! lol

Thanks for such speedy responses! I like the thought of taking him out for a romantic meal - we had talked about going out to celebrate but I think I could book somewhere nice and pick up the bill and it would go a small way of showing him how special he is :0) He proposed on our 7 year anniversary of when we met, it was a complete (but very lovely) surprise!
About time emoire
Probably a coincidence - us men are useless with memorable dates.
I actually got engaged on a Friday the 13th,got the the intended a lovely engagement ring and a Ford Fiesta,
She crashed the car into the back of a recovery vehicle in Dudley and lost the engagement ring in the sea on our honeymoon,
I'm amazed we were together so long!
Lol,
