Now it seems more of a symbol that the couple are going steady..........and they have merely agreed to 'get engaged', forgetting the 'wedding' bit.
But it certainly seems snobbery is playing a part in your question, Poodicat. What on earth does it matter (to you) exactly how much the ring cost ?

Pft - I feel cheated - never had an engagement ring.. infact was never engaged... just pregnant so got married. Never really had a wedding ring either, just some cheap crap which was used for the wedding and I never wore again (again, due to being chubby and preggers)... Never mind. When Rafa wants to marry me I'm sure he'll spoil me rotten...
Rather nice is that Rafa. Can't you just 'live in sin' with him HippyHoppy. My wedding ring got lost years ago and never did get replaced.
It seems to me JTH that getting engaged nowadays is just an excuse to flash an expensive ring. You can get engaged without a ring. Getting engaged, as you say, used to mean you have both decided to get married. I don't think marriage even gets mentioned in a lot of cases nowadays.
I seem to have managed very well without rings!
