Onwards and Downwards Continues in January 2014
Happy New Year,
Welcome to this month's Onwards & Downwards. We welcome anyone serious about losing weight and we offer support and kind thoughts - not magic fixes, just sensible help.
I hope you all had the Christmas and New Year you wished for, don't know about you but I over-indulged (and it was yummy).
Let's get back to basics what are you favourite and most helpful diet tips? Things that have worked for you.
Don't forget your weekly weigh on Wednesday and remember we don't judge! Here is last months thread

OH is doing the Dryathon in January (sponsored no-alcohol, for Cancer Relief) so I bit the bullet alongside him and signed up for Weightwatchers Online. My weighing morning is Tuesday - I am pleased to say that I lost 3 lbs in the first week, and know that I'm another lb light this morning. I am determined, this time!

Hi xstiticher. To lose that much I had cereal and fruit in the morning, home made vegetable soups or an omelette for lunch and evening meal was either stir fry veg with noodles and chicken or prawns, or vegetable and bean chilli which lasted me a couple of days. If I did get hungry I would snack on ham or chicken with pickled onions, gherkins and beetroot. I'm addicted to my pickles lately. Also no alcohol for the week!
That sounds like good meal planning Jan. Like you I LOVE pickles but I must warn you that there is a lot of sugar and salt in them, so try and eat them sparlingly. Have you every tried celery or grated carrots sprinkled with lemon juice and salt as snacks. When I stopped smoking any desire for alcohol flew out the window so that was a plus for me but, in return I developed a sweet tooth which I now must fight against.
Keep on going Jan. You are doing so well!

There are some good ideas there for the rest of us Jan, inspirational as always. And well done Boxtops, great start.
I'm going to try your snack suggestion xstitcher, i just love celery.
When I need a snack I have half a packet of mini rice cakes such as cheese and chive Snackajacks, or the marmite ones. Or a very small handful of nuts (my vegetarian replacement for chicken/ham) with a celery stick and carrot. Another option i find useful in the winter is to have a milky coffee made with skimmed milk, it often suppresses the desire for a snack.

Where I live I can get something called mini milk which has 0.05% fat. I use it for everything and can even foam it for my elevencies cappuccino. Like you maydup I find it fills up that before lunch hole. I have it with some raisins, cranberries or Lidl's snack bar which are very good. I wish I could get those mini rice cakes you mentioned. They sound fab.
http:// www.dai lymail. co.uk/h ome/ind ex.html I hope the page I want about your hand being a measuring guide to the amount of food you eat...comes out of this link. It's good.
I know the O&D weighing day is tomorrow, but my WW weighday is this morning - and after a bit of a wiggle mid-week (friend's birthday cake....), I've lost another 2 lbs. That's 5 lbs since 1 Jan. I am pleased - I thought that this week might show a "status quo maintained" rather than a loss! :-) :-)
