little bit of squeaky bum because I have just restarted my dormant business by taking on an office and two employees.
I have been as careful as possible with the cashflow but still feeling nervous.
Do you think i am nuts in the middle (or even beginning) of a recession?

Depends on what your business is?
Re-starting the business is the sensible thing to do- if you can make it in a recession, you can make it, period.

You are, however, nuts for taking on staff - that is just madness :-)
sack staff before 2y employment is up & they start tribunals - brings down too many small businesses!
As far as staff are concerned; it's actually easy to sack unsatisfactory employees as long as you do it through the correct procedure. Too many employers sack someone who subsequently wins a case against them because they don't do it correctly. It's no good saying 'well I sacked him after x # of years, because he's never been any good'. Whereas if you say, 'He has had these documented verbal warning(s) followed by written warning(s) and received this training in an effort to bring his behaviour/work to an acceptable level, this did not work so I have ended his contract'. All is OK.
