What do Muslim men find so threatening about women not dressed in a heavy duty tarp? I don't think the prophet gave any such orders did he?

In the 1970s, during the reign of the Shah, women in Iran could dress pretty much as they liked. The majority of people there were OK with that.

Now, with this theocratic government in power,a tiny minority impose their puritanical on everybody.

I thought you were a fan Sandy.

// I don't think the prophet gave any such orders did he?//

He did.  Women's dress is all about men's lust.  Showing an ankle or a bare arm is considered tempting - and if the worst happens it's invariably considered to be the woman's fault.  There are rules for men too but women get the poorest deal by far.

Most Iranians practice Shi'ism.  The Sunni believe they are heretics.

Who am I to disagree?

well we know you are a Hamas fan so we know you don't disagree.

You know no such thing.

Hamas is the product of Israeli oppression of the Palestinians.  They deserve to live free from the bigoted zealots who occupy their lands.

"You know no such thing." - you demonstrate it every day me old china.

That also sounds a tad bigotty-zealotty anti-Semitic to me.

But this isn't about Israel ... or the war ....or the Jews .... or the Palestinians.... or Hamas.   It's about women and oppression.

It will be coming here just you watch.

As soon as they have infiltrated enough the blasphemy laws and Sharia Courts will follow.

Coming to a town near you in a few years.

A Muslim on here once told me I should try wearing a burka.  He assured me that my husband would still love me.  I think he thought I should be grateful for that.  Truth is my husband would think I'd flipped!

A major aspect of Arabic culture involves control of women by the evocation of supposed instruction from The Prophet Muhammad.

As with any and all religions, those in power cherry pick the bits that they can twist into control of the faithful, in ways that perpetuates the power and control of the leadership.

Since virtually every religion on the planet is under the exclusive control of men, it's not unexpected that they perpetuate that control with the subjugation of women.

It is front and centre in Islam, but let's not pretend that any more subtle control systems are any less abhorrent because they are more subtle in their control systems - the Catholic church remains a major offender in this area of operation.

That's not likely.  In time they'll come to love our country and its freedoms.

This would make them mild.

A rugged people, and thro' soft degrees

Subdue them to the useful and the good.

They'll become law abiding and useful citizens.

Where subjugation of women is concerned, compared with Islam Catholicism is a very poor also ran.

My post was directed at 16:30.

Naomi - Subjugation is wrong anywhere and everywhere, Islam is not demonised and Catholicism is not exonerated by a pointless attempt at a ratings system.

Andy Hughes, No one said it isn't wrong - simply that the two religions in that respect (and actually in most other respects) don't compare.
