Not sure about the answer to your question, but I suggest you avoid Santander like the plague. They've had so many problems integrating all the banks that they've taken over that their customer service seems to have become non-existent and it will probably be a long long time before they've got their systems integrated and offer anything like a decent service.

Yes that was basically my point in asking the question as my rbs account is going to become 1 with santander and iev heard alot about how they can be a pain in the backside to deal with and would like to change to a bank that is good on customer service etc, dealing with issues promptly etc

Yes i just had a thought and which do a comparison of various bank accounts
I`ve got accounts with Santander (two Alliance & Leicester ones and one Bradford and Bingley plus my mortgage). I must admit I`d heard about their crap service but I can`t say I`ve had any complaints. When I have spoken to them, they`ve been ok. I find it harder to get to speak to someone at Lloyds to be honest.

scrap what i just said i think money supermarket or the defaqto site are better
Best current accounts: First Direct, Virgin One, Co-op Bank, Smile, Nationwide.
Worst: Clydesdale, Halifax, Santander, Bank of Scotland.
Source: Which? Website - but you have to be a member to access full details which is why I have listed the overall results for you.
I first opened an account, years ago with Abbey National, subsequently Abbey and now
Santander.
In all this time I have found them ( the staff in branch ) to be very friendly and helpful.
My only problems, were,a few years ago when I had to deal with an Indian call centre.
I,m sorry, but more often than not I could not understand them.
Perhaps it was the distance !
Also, in defence of Which? I'd point out that they include thousands of members' actual experience of their bank accounts whereas other sites do not have that sort of input.
