Many of my friends have said Saga is best but I have been insured with Liverpool Victoria for both my car and house because Saga rates my house as being in a higher risk area of the city where as Liverpool Victoria do not.
One road over can make a difference.
My experience they have both paid very quickly.
A lady ran in to the back of my car and she was insured with Saga.
Saga was on the phone the next morning and said it was clearly their clients fault.
They said if I was willing to have the repair done at their approved Toyota Garage I would not have to involve my own insurance.
I phoned my own insurance company and they said that was OK.
The only thing I found strange was the Saga approved Totota agent was 18 miles from where I live but my own insurance approved agent was 3 miles away.
Both offered me a hire car so I just drove the 18 miles, a hire car was waiting about 10 minutes walk from the agent and my car was fully repaired 5 days later.
I have had 2 claims on my house insurance. Liverpool Victoria arranged for the essential repairs to be done within 3 days and they were completed about a month later.

I got mine through GoCompare. Its called Insure4retirement and is miles cheaper and covers more events than anyone else. Its all genuine, you can check with any company you are not sure about with FSA.
ps whenever I check quotes Saga are never the cheapest by far. Bit of a con if you ask me. Same goes for companies like AA and RAC.

The trouble with the big players like AA and Saga is they only have a limited number of insurers on their panel from which to choose and are rarely the cheapest. They do not scour the market like the online brokers.
You also have to be careful of companies who say they do use comparison sites as this is just a ploy. Its better to shop around and I reckon the comparison sites do all the work for you.
ps I have a story about Castle Insurance. They kept bombarding me with flyers about special insurance for over 50s and said they would pay £30 if they could not beat any quote. Well they could not beat insure4retirement (which also had superior cover) so I asked them to send me £30 which they did'

Saga were quite reasonable. I unfortunately had to make a claim some years ago when insured with them. I could not fault them from starting the claim to completion which made the whole incident much easier to cope with. Only left them because I get a reduction with my husband being in a union so am with L&V at present. Best to shop around, though cheapest isn't necessarilly the best!!
I had a claim thru Saga on my Home Insurance in the past and they were fab, they paid out without even wanting a receipt. But this time, they were £700 instead of the £300 I am now paying RAC! Let's hope I don't need to claim though as their after service seems to leave a lot to be desired ... suppose that's why they are cheaper.
Saga as a returning customer would have been slightly cheaper than L&V and was tempted to return but we also have motor & pet insurance with L&V so in the end we have stayed with L&V. There was only about £10 difference but we will see what next years renewal brings. I would not hesitate returning to Saga if they were considerably cheaper as their claims, I couldn't fault them.
