I think it's the other way round - stupid to invent a coin that won't fit ant of the machines. Just think of the cost of adapting everything to fit the coin!
to add insult to injury you only get new coins in change now.(here anyway),and if i pay by card in the car park i use i have the privilege of a 50p charge on a debit or credit card !
It's not as if the change had been a big secret and businesses hadn't been telt well in advance. A pal was telling me that at one car park she uses, there is one machine which won't take the smaller 10p but it will take the old version...
All the 'fruit machines' in my local boozer take them, and did from day one. You only have until September before the old ones are taken out of use altogether !
just had to get an old coin from Tesco customer services as the new ones won't fit the trolleys. I'll hoard it for as long as I can.
The problem isn't really the coin, though, it's the businesses that have known about it for months and done nothing to prepare. That includes the council and their parking meters,
“Just think of the cost of adapting everything to fit the coin!”
Quite so. I read of a launderette owner who calculated it would cost around £4,000 to have his machines converted (a tidy sum when you’re charging £3.50 a wash). So he’s decided to hoard a stack of the old coins and sell them to his customers to use in his machines. Then he’ll simply collect and recycle them daily.
“Don't you ever buy a newspaper, or a packet of Fruit Gums ?”
Yes Mikey. That’s what contactless payment cards are for. There are already a few establishments that no longer accept cash at all and I imagine the number will grow.
