...to do the same job [an example taken, allegedly, from one company in one industry cited by a contributor to a discussion on Sky News about the "gender pay gap"], then why doesn't that company stop hiring blokes?

I think you may have inverted the company's reasoning.....it pays a premium to the people who it wants to employ and is concerned to retain. it isn't so interested in employing and retaining women.

Probably, but one of the reasons for the gap would be reduced.

Yes it absolutely is....but businesses are often not run on sensible principles...I give you the NHS as a prime example.
