Wrote Barclays Cheque For £40, Got Debited £41.54 On Statement. Why?

I'd guess it depended on your account rules. Why not query it with Barclays ?

They usually want to know your entire life history before answering a simple question.

You are right of course, but it is just a standard current account and I am a bit puzzled.

I have a Barclays current account and don't get charged for using my cheque book, though it has been quite a while since I have done so, but if I did, they'd be my first port of call. Try contacting them through On-line Banking if you don't want to phone them...

I have a current account with Barclays and when I have written cheques, they have always been on my statement at the correct amount.

Was the cheque issued abroad or sent abroad? Foreign fees would be payable if so.

Only way to know for sure is to ask Barclays

It may be a simple error but whatever it is you won't find out on here. You need to prepare your life history and then speak to Barclays.

seems like a keying/cheque reading error- or perhaps the payee changed the amount before banking it.

To anyone remotely interested now - upon emailing them they apologized and made a refund of £1 54, so obviously some kind of error they chose not to explain and wished me a lovely day and hoped I was well!

Well done nonentity for pursuing, you almost had me looking at my account with Barclays. I probably use 3 cheques a year these days and had never noticed if the amounts tally.
