Chip and Pin - Non UK Resident

How will Chip and Pin affect visitors to the UK from 14 Feb? My overseas issuer says that the card reader will recognise that it is a card issued outside the UK and allow a signature. However, my card issuer has been spectacularly wrong in the past and I would like to check. The Chip and Pin website doesn't seem to cover this.

Your card issuer is right.

However beware of ill-trained shop assistants who will think that they can only accept chip and pin. There's going to be confusion for a while.

You do not say if your card has a chip. Apparently U.K. card issuers are to issue different cards to people who have a genuine reason for not using a PIN - presumably these will either be cards without a Chip or something that allows the retailer to know they can accept a signature. I do not think it fair to blame a retailer for any confusion. Incidently, I had several cards which were replaced by Chip&Pins - although still valid by date. Mine without a chip were destroyed but as many people dispensed with their cards when they got the new chipped ones, it`s fair bet that a lot of the old cards will have got into the wrong hands. So any problem you have is likely to be just part of a wider issue.
