The second line will have a/c payee already printed down it. This means that the cheque can only be paid into the account of the person actually written on the cheque (as you would expect!)
Hope this helps
chazza - what bank do you bank with? These are open cheques - which means that the person you make a cheque payable to can take it into the branch of the bank you bank with and exchange it for cash. These cheques used to be quite common in the 1970's. I was paid this way for a while, we just took the cheque into the branch and got cash. I though that all banks had agreed to stop issuing them and all cheques are now crossed AND have a/c payee only on them, which means they can only be paid into an account in the payees name. If a cheque doesn't have account payee only on them they can be endorsed by the payees signature on the back and paid into someone elses bank account. As you can imagine there ended up being quite a bit of fraud hence the change.
