claiming my tax back

during the summer i did some 1 off work for a company. they have sent me a cheque for �175, was devistated to see in the pay slip �16 national insurance and �53 income tax. as i am just out off uni and this was my first bit off work was a little shocked, how should i go about getting this sorted.
