Cheques dated on a Sunday

A colleague has just told me that there is a little known law which says that it is illegal to write a cheque & date it with a Sunday date.

This seems preposterous to me and it's not unknown for him to play jokes but he is insisting that it is true.

Does anyone know?

Many Thanks

He is quite correct. The Cheques Act 1986 section 16 deals with the dates of cheques and says:

(2) A cheque is not invalid by reason only that:
(a) it is not dated;
(b) it is antedated or post‑dated; or
(c) the date it bears is a Sunday.

Thank you for that Squarebear

I shall now go & apologise for disbelieving him
If you want to get him back you could tell him that it's still illegal to sell fish and chips on a Sunday too. It goes back to the days when there was no refrigeration but was never repealed.
1) The UK has no Cheques Act 1986, that appears to be Australian legislation.

2) That Act actually states the reverse i.e. a cheque is not invalid by reason of the date it bears is a Sunday.

3) None of the relevant UK legislation (The Bills of Exchange Act 1882, The Cheques Act 1952, The Cheques Act 1992) make any reference to Sunday being taboo in regard of cheque validity.
My apologies. You are quite right. It is indeed Australia which has that ruling.
i alwasy used to write my cheques for bills out on a sunday. Do you think I can claim the payments back as they were incorrectly cashed??? :)

I used to work in a bank and I've NEVER heard that one about a cheque with a Sunday date being invalid. I'm sure if it was true then our managers would have used that as an excuse to return cheques rather than 'refer to drawer please represent' in a case when there were insufficient funds to pay the cheque. However, it is illegal for a woman to sign a legal document using the prefix Mrs! So if a woman signed Mrs Ann Smith that is not a valid signature, however signing A Smith or Ann Smith is perfectly acceptable.
