Hi, I work for a diffrent bank & we offer Solo debit cards from 13 years. These type of cards seek authorisation everytime they are used, i.e. no money - no workey!! They are accepted in most major stores.
I think I used to have an Electron card, which was the same kind of thing, but not accepted everywhere.

would you be able to say what bank you are talking about?
My Grand-daughter has a NatWest debit card since being 13 - I think all the banks are OK at 13 but with slightly different systems.
This from the Nationwide website... If you would like to upgrade your FlexAccount and have a debit card facility you may be eligible if your account is well conducted. However, there are circumstances where we would not be able to consider upgrading your account, which include: if you are under age 18 your existing account has been open for less than 7 months you have applied for an upgrade within the last 4 months your account has recently been overdrawn without authorisation other Nationwide products you hold have been in arrears your account has not been used in the last 3 months loans, mortgages or credit cards you hold with other providers have been in arrears you are currently bankrupt or subject to an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_account/managi ng_your_account/taking_money_out.htm#a12
^^^ Just posted using the beta site and it removed the formatting from my answer.

I'll now try that again using the old site.

How a bout a pre paid, refillable bank card? It is like a Gift certificate that has a Visa or similar logo on it and can be used in most shops. You could put his allowance on it and it would help him learn to budget. many of my students get them when they go off to college. I think they are refillable on line or over the phone. I don't know if he could pull cash from a machine. Maybe it gets a pin for that too. Just a thought.
Sorry, just noticed your question - HSBC!
