Deceased credit card debt
29 Answers
My fahter recently died, leaving credit card debts. He left me the house, but I have no funds to cover the debts, only the house which I live in. As I was his carer for four years, I was unemployed during this time. Am I still legally due to pay off the complete debt owed?

Gleavey , first of all may I say I am sorry to hear of your fathers death . It must be a worry for you now you have found he has debts that have now become yours. I would definately go and seek help from your local CAB , they will handle the credit companies for you and negotiate the freezing of the accounts and a means tested way of paying off the debt at a minimal rate. When my brother died suddenly the credit card company wrote the debt off as soon as they were informed of his death and were sent a death certificate . I'm not saying for sure if you will be treated the same , but do try to get advice hun. x
I see this post littered with some idiots who know nothing about the subject, who assume CC debts can be avoided if they are not in your name. Others are mere wind-up merchants who belong in Chatterbank.

The executor of your father's estate (which may or may not be you) are unlikely to be able to avoid this debt. When the accounts of the estate were drawn up by the executor, these debts should have been shown. It seems that they were not. You should contact the CC company and explain the situation. I am very sure that if they think the executor should have known about the debts and they were ignored from the estate accounts, they will come after that person for payment.
