Can anyone recommend a good mortgage for a first-time buyer, preferably with a 2 or 3 year discounted rate.

I think the moneysupermarket links through from www.thisismoney.co.uk. Its worth reading through the property part and using the calculators because they have some wise advice on how much you should borrow and not what you can borrow.
Remember there is no such thing as a free lunch and whatever offer you take you will in some way pay for the privilege.
I know that on the moneysupermarket they give you the actual cost of the mortgage (taking into consideration the low intro rates and cashback etc). It is all rather sobering!
As a regular contributor (honest) I would be happy to lend a hand on the basis that any fees I get are given to a charity of your choice - look me up on btlm.co.uk. The reason I say you need advice is that there are lots of things you need to consider such as tie in periods, up front costs, fee free deals, stepped discounted rates etc etc. Also be aware that mortgage regulation hits the UK this Sunday (31st Oct 2004) so only regulated advisers can give mortgage advice. The important thing here is that brokers need a lot more info about you now than was previously required as you can sue a broker if they gave you a mortgage which did not do what you wanted or if you were duped in some way. If you gave me the one liner you posted above I would not be able to give you an answer.
