Hell no, changing anything to do with a mortgage is a bloody nightmare. The wife and I bought our house together before we were married. We thought it would be a simple matter to change her surname on the mortgage when we got married but no, not a bit of it. If we wanted to change it we had to incur several hundred pounds of legal fees. They said they didn't actually require it to be changed so it wasn't and it still hasn't six years on. The mortgage will remain jointly in her maiden name until it is paid off.

As usual Vibrashpere is full of sh1te. You can only remove someone from a mortgage if he lender agrees. They will only agree if they satisfy themselves that the remaining mortgagee satisfies their lending conditons and the land registry entry is amended to remove the person concerned. Effectively in this case it would require that your friend signs over her share of the equity, which I don't think she would do without compensation, and that the lender would have to agree to lend the full amount to the husband alone.
