Hi,

My partner has the option to work in Germany for five months and is probably going to take it, we have been together about 18 months and the relationship is great. What are the chances of it surviving the distance for five months? Any success/ horror stories??

Sorry to be negative but in my experience long distance romances do not work.
Five months will fly by. If your relationship is great, you'll have no worries, IMO. These days it's easy to get in touch almost instantly.
You can survive this!........my OH hs worked abroad most of our married life, with breaks, of course!.............if you have the trust in each other, then you'll cope!.........not easy!.........but sometimes it has to be done!......
There you are - one negative, one positive, take your pick.
I agree with Trimeresurus, you must have your doubts already or you wouldn't ask.

My other half has been to Iraq for 3 months and we survived fine, we wrote, spoke on the phone and emailed each other. He left to go to Afghanistan for 3 months today and the thought of us not surviving has not crossed my mind once. Instead there was tears because we won't see each other for 3 months and I keep thinking of the joy and relief when he returns.

You need to look at your relationship, there must be a reason you are asking this and doubting it will not work. Germany isn't very far away, one or both of you can even fly over to see the other.
Germany is really easy!......You can go for weekends, and he can come home for his weekends too!...........you can cope with it, if you want to!........he needs to earn a living for his family!..............
Yes Germany is 2 hours away by plane, my kids visit frequently and I visit them, almost easier than them living 300 miles away in this country and flights can be had for £10 with Ryan Air:)
if you have no underlying problems then it should be a breeze.

I spent 4 years out of the past 7 away from my wife and family thanks to our government sticking its nose where it isnt wanted. Was so glad when I was retired due to injury as sad as that sounds....

as others have said 5 months will fly by and communication is not hard or expensive between here and Germany, plus depending on where he is working it can be a beautiful place to visit and flights are cheap enough. I lived there for ten years off and on and loved it.
yes, you will miss him, and he'll miss you too, but he'll be doing this to support his famly!.......you need to be brave too!................
Nothing could stop your love for each other if you have a great relationship and understanding. Five months is a NO big deal. Me and my partner are away since six years and we still have the same bonding, same love and respect for each other irrespective of geographical boundaries. So what you are up to? What a relationship demands is Loyalty.
