I bought my Ex .Mother in-Law a new chair for her Birthday but she wouldn't plug it in!!!
Nice one Ratter!
i get on really well with my mother in law, so i could buy her something funny ao tacky and she'd love it. why don't you get her a nice plant instead of flowers, so she can keep them for longer. a nice framed picture? a hamper? get her a voucher for a spa treatment and go together!
helium balloons! I did this for my Grandma when it was her 70th, got a packet of differently coloured balloons with Happy 70th Birthday on, the shop had a helium pump and I got them to blow them up for me and tie on ribbons to hold them with, my Grandma loved them! Don't know if this would be practical for you if you have to send them though!
Does she like things like afternoon tea? I don't know how close you live to London but there are some beautiful places to have afternoon tea (I think the ritz will be quite touristy but you can go to other's like Claridges/Dorchester/Fortnum and Masons etc etc) and if you can't get a voucher for them (I know that some do them) then perhaps you could offer to pay/contribute (if the price was steep). If you don't fancy going with her perhaps that her daughter could go? Even if you don't live close to London, local nicer hotels should do it.
Going to see my mum in law this weekend in
Wolverhapton.
She lives in Birmingham but looks better from Wolverhampton.
pmsl Doc! good one! :-)
something sentimental. Like someone else said - a framed picture of her + children, or Child/children
Or something sentimental from where she grew up like for example:

- a book on 'Surrey' in the 1940s (or whenever she was a teenager/area she lived)

- a painting of the area where she grew up

i wiuld suggest taking her out to a show perhaps and making a night of it .pre theatre meal etc.

though to read on here today i think a handful of drugs is what most folk would suggets .lol
Give her loads of drugs!!!!!!! But go easy on the alcohol, don't want her to come to any harm!!
I think she would appreciate vouchers so she can choose her own present. e.g.
Garden centre voucher
Boots voucher
M & S voucher
This is something I like to receive for my birthday.
Theatre vouchers are good you can get them from WHS and the like.

How about some good quality chocolates....... Hotel Chocolat do some fantastic gift sets which they will post straight to your mum in law with a little note attached.
A muzzle.
