We called my older son Sunny boy for a few years as well as he always had a sunny smile - I guess that you are trying not to make it too contrived so that his parents don't know that you are avoiding using his name? I would tend to go for some sort of complimentary baby babble until he is old enough that you don't need to shout on him (or you get used to it) e.g. hello there cheeky chops/smiler/hansome/gorgeous, - then hopefully something will just come up.
my son called ryan- never gets called ryan, he gets called bubs. when i was pregnant my older son used to say bubs is in mommys belly so that kind of stuck, now everyone calls him bubs. my niece is called kaylee, but my partner called her princess from the day she was born and 3 years later thats what she answers to. just find something cute or funny and it wont look like you dont like the name.
i have never heard that name been used before.
can you not just call him something like annie suggested, my mom always says things like cheeky charlie to my older son so maybe something on that line
