Anyone else think this is a stupid system???
The earnings bracket is 24k up to 40k! How is that fair? I'm off on the dole & applying for a council house...... i'd be better off. Rant over!

It's a lot
more complex than just your earnings.

its based on how many children you have & your sole or joint income ,depending on how your claiming according to the lady i just spoke 2. I just can't believe someone who earns 40k gets the same as 24k!

Urgh its the whole benefits culture. Id pay less rent on a council flat than what i do on my mortgage. For people who "do the right thing" there's no reward.

you're right though eddie, id rather not be taxed on my earnings & receive no child tax/ child benefit. Would save alot of time!
There's a very simple on line form to check whether you qualify and whether the advice you've been given is correct.

ahh well we're in the 2nd year, so will see what happens in a year! After i had my son we went from 1 end of the scale to the other & still get the same.

docspock - i reckon itll get sorted. I read something in the paper around the time of the election that people claiming disability would have to have a fitness test to weed out the fakers. Perhaps a little humiliating for genuine claimers, but it'll get rid of the dodgy ones!
of course you'd pay less rent for a council flat than you do for your mortgage - one day your mortgage will be finished but council rent goes on for ever. What's "the right thing" - not everyone in council housing is on benefits?

Why shouldn't someone on 40k get the same as someone 24k - they are paying twice as much into the benefits system? In fact why isn't it that the more you pay in, the more you get back?

sorry eddi, i asked the tax credits lady what the bandings were & she said 24-40 i asked her to repeat it cause i couldn't believe it!

Question Author
ahhh see that makes more sense. She's told me wrong then. I'm getting the right amount for our family, so i'm happy :) I just thought that it was unfair if what she told me was correct. Im glad its not! Thanks for your help x

Thanks Eddi. My child tax is correct - the confusion i had was about people on different wages getting the same allowance. Thanks anyway :)
