my daughter is six weeks old. since birth she has had problems pooping. for about three days she'll be fine, then her poop is so hard you have to dig it out of her. i've tried prune juice, karo syrup, sopositories,gas drops, and three diff. formulas. nothing has helped.can you help me?

Please don't give anything else to your baby if she is only six weeks old.  Who told you to use suppositories?  Take her to your doctor or mother and baby clinic as soon as you can.

If you've tried everything the doctor has recommended and it still doesn't work then ask to be referred to a specialist at your local hospital.

I agree, if nothing the doctor has suggested has worked sufficiently, take her back. There is obviously a problem that needs sorting.

so nobody thinks i'm over reacting? i made my daughter an apt. tommorow. hopefully the doctor wll do more for her.

Have you tried soya milk? She might be lactose intolerant, although this usually gives babies diarrhoea rather than constipation.

When I was a student nurse they suggested a spoonful of sugar in the night time bottle, but that's probably frowned upon nowadays!

Ask your health visitor for advice on this one - it's what she's there for, and she knows much more about babies than a GP does, because she has specialised knowledge of young children.

she started out on enfamil lipel with iron, then they switched her to prosobee(soy milk), then nutramagin.now he has her back on prosobee. i think she might have an anorectol malformation. mabey the anal passage is too narrow. i'm gonna demand an ultra sound today.i'll keep you all posted. thank you so much for your advice.

Of course you're not over reacting ALLO but if it sounded like I did & came over a bit bossy in my earlier post I do apologise!  I was just horrified at the thought of such a poor little mite having suppositories (as well as all the other things).

As ursula says, at one time it was just a bit of sugar & extra fluid & that usually sorted the problem.

Hope she's better very soon.

the doctors still didn't say much today. they say to just give her real prune juice, not baby, and let her go. if she doesn't poop don't worry about it. unless it goes longer than a week. it sounds cruel to me. like yeah i know you cant poop so oh well. mabey i need a new doctor!

`Dare I suggest here that breast-fed babies rarely suffer any of the digestive disorders associated with formula-feeding?

emilly ball, dare i say that i know a mom who is breast feeding and her child can't go at all! i would like to thank everyone for their answers. my daughter is doing better. the lord is taking good care of her now

I remember my son being constipated at his 6 week check up and the Dr recommended using ready made cartons of formula not making it up with powder myself, something to do with it having a smoother consistancy. It must have worked cos i don't remember having to mention it again.

Have you tried baby massage as well? It's worth a shot and isn't invasive. Make sure you read up so you get the movements right! Good luck
