Without meaning to be too vague, are there any real sure-fire signs of being ready to start a family? When should feeling ridiculously broody lead to serious baby consideration?

Any advice appreciated

There is no good or sensible answer to your question and no right  time to have a baby, there can always be something to stand in the way, wait til we have a bit of money behind us, wait til we are older, wait til we have a bigger house, just do it, if you are happy together it will all work out.
If your 'broody' & you feel happy, confident & in love with 'the other baby-maker'. Then I would say its time you talk about making a family..!!
But make sure you talk first.!!!

thank you to you both - just what I wanted to hear!
Totally agree - there is no "right time" - if you say you'll wait till you can afford it, you'll never do it, if you say you'll wait till you're older, you'll never do it. If you are seriously broody and your partner is happy to become a parent, and so are you, I'd say just get on and do it. Like Jacquie said, if you're happy together things will work out.
