My son who is 21 months doesn't put much in his mouth now but when he does, I don't panic and make a fuss, I just put out my hand and say "Yuk, that's not for eating!!" and he now spits it out, as my reaction is one of "how disgusting" rather than "oh my god he's going to choke..!"
That aside, I think its just a matter of checking the area, being vigilant and waiting for that glorious day when she grows out of it!!
Did you know, by the way, that in many ofsted approved nurseries, they put dry pasta shells in the sandpit, so the children can appreciate the 'different textures!' How crazy is that for the mouth inserting toddler??
